New EDF Report focuses on importance of shipping efficiency for logistics operations

by Press Release on 2012-02-21

New technology and thinking are unlocking a raft of previously unattainable economic and environmental efficiencies in the commercial shipping industry, according to the "Smart Moves" report released this week by the Environmental Defence Fund (EDF).

The report highlights the role of shippers and their significant control over the environmental footprint of logistics operations, illustrated with a collection of innovative strategies that shippers can use to cut freight costs and reduce environmental impact.

"Smart Moves" has been launched to coincide with a new collaboration between EDF and logistics providers, shippers and other experts and builds on previous work between EDF and Walmart, FedEx and others to accelerate the adoption of cheaper, less emissions-intensive ways to transport commercial cargo.

"Transport and logistics providers and the companies they work for are looking beyond traditional measures, across multiple modes and competitive boundaries for creative ways to save fuel, cut costs, and improve environmental performance," said Jason Mathers, who leads the EDF initiative. "Our role is bringing together leading innovators from different sectors to catalog and quantify the results, and spread the best solutions as far and fast as possible."

Transportation accounts for 89 percent of the environmental footprint of supply chain logistics and global freight transportation and distribution account for nearly three billion metric tons of carbon emissions each year.
